Massey University, the major sponsor of the Massey University Harbour Sport Excellence Awards, has this year established a new award known as the Massey University Innovation in Sport Award, which aims to celebrate innovation and entrepreneurship in the field of sport, in its broadest context. The inaugrual award will be presented at the annual 2012 Massey University Harbour Sport Excellence Awards to be held the 16th of November at North Harbour Stadium.

Vice-chancellor Steve Maharey believes, "Now more than ever, innovation has to be the single most important driving force in education as universities embrace change and engage with the formidable challenges of the 21st century."

This Massey University Innovation in Sport award aims to recognise as wide a group as possible, such as schools, clubs or businesses, whether innovative individuals or organisations that have made a significant contribution to the field of sport due to a pioneering initiative they have created and/or undertaken.These can include but is not limited to: administration, management, sport science, facility development, marketing, event management, sport capability, coaching, community initiatives, volunteering or similar fields.
