The Chess Club

We open early in the year, usually in the third or fourth week in Term 1.

The chess club is open to all students on Tuesdays and Thursdays at lunchtime in B1 during Terms 1, 2 and 3.

The more serious chess players have the opportunity to represent the school and play other schools in an Auckland competition. Westlake usually has four teams entered in this competition, two teams in the senior division and two teams in the junior division. The preliminary competition is held during Term 2, the best placed teams from this competition competing in the Auckland Finals in Term 3.

Westlake Boys' High School last won the Senior A Competition in 2002 and the Junior A Competition in 2000 in the Auckland Finals.
In recent years our competing teams usually place between 3rd and 5th in Auckland.

The chess club runs two tournaments in Term 3 to determine a Junior and Senior Chess Champion. These winners receive a cup which is presented to them at Prizegiving.

The chess club closes down during Term 4 so the students can prepare for their upcoming examinations.
