$330m Boost for Cycleways

1 Jul 2015

Some significant news was released and although it may not be well known Bike Northland has played a good part in what has been achieved.

The WDC has helped out with some funding for the Bikes in Schools programme and in return Bike Northland have helped them to pick up an additional $3.5 million of central government funding for off road cycleway construction.

All the years of submitting to the WDC planning processes on cycling are paying off with more funding support for cycling related projects in the Councils long term plan than ever before.

Bike Northland can take a pat on the back for this as it was part of their strategic direction to increase participation in cycling, and we also can thank Sport Northland for their continued support.

In Whangarei we have gone from virtually no funding of any significance for cycle way construction in 2012 to over $6.5 million in projects to be completed in the next 3 years.

Bike Northlands aim is to engage with the other Northland District Councils in a similar manner in the near future as there is a strong interest in their Bikes in Schools programme throughout the whole of Northland.

Bike Northland have a partnership with the WDC that is getting results and now is also getting significant funding support. They are being recognised for the part they play in the bigger picture of getting people riding bikes again. Hopefully that might in turn help with more funding for cycling in the future.

Check out the fact sheet that has Sport Northlands CEO Brent Eastwood riding with the students at one of the “Bikes in Schools” schools at their track opening day.
