GENERAL INFORMATION

Sports Council

The Sports Council is lead by our Sports Leader, Olivia Ritchie. The council’s role is to help the Sports Leader in organizing all interhouse sports competitions. They also help co-ordinate all sports team results and the presentation of sports results and achievements in assembly and organize other sports related activities.  They assist the Director of Sport with the organization of the annual Sports Awards Dinner. Any suggestions or queries regarding sports can be brought to the council or the Director of Sport.

Interhouse Competitions

There are 3 major interhouse sports competitions during the year in which all students participate: Athletics Sports, Swimming Sports and Cross-Country. Some smaller interhouse sports competitions are held during each term at lunch breaks or after school and may include indoor rowing, tennis, netball, triathlon, hockey & volleyball.

Sportsweek in 2012 will run during week 4 (14th May) of Term 2.

During this week, various interhouse sporting activities are run at lunch breaks and a sporting personality is invited to speak at chapel or assembly.

Sports Uniforms

Appropriate sports dress for:

  1. Sports Practices: All players are required to wear their sports uniform or PE gear to practices (no other gear is permitted).  If incorrectly dressed you will be sent to change or have to sit out on the sideline watching the practice proceed. If walking or travelling on public transport (including taxis) to or from sports practices a full school tracksuit must be worn.
  2. Sports Matches: Only 100% correct sports uniforms for your sport is acceptable.  Any player incorrectly dressed may not take the field.  Check the information booklet and diagrams to ensure you know what your sport requires and make the necessary purchases from the school shop before your sport starts.

Additional Team Gear

Teams are not allowed to purchase an extra team ‘t-shirt’ / warm-up shirt / polar fleece top etc. without prior permission from the Director of Sport. Team Rugby jerseys are a special privilege uniform item for our top winter sports teams only.

Sponsorship

No sponsor’s names can be printed on any school sports uniforms.  Sponsors names can however appear on sports bags but the colour of these bags is restricted to navy or red and both the bags and sponsored lettering must be approved by the Director of Sport.

Sports Notices/Fixtures/ Cancellations

All students must make a regular routine of checking the Sports Notice Boards which are situated on the wall of B block, facing the quad.  All important notices and draws will be placed on these boards.  Cancellation of matches or practices will be written up on the whiteboard at the sports notice boards before the end of the school day. Weekly fixtures will be placed on the sports website and sports notice board. Students are responsible for checking this board or the sports website before leaving school.

Student Responsibilities to extra-curricular activities

As a student at Dio, your academic achievements are top priority but sport, recreation, music, drama and debating can provide balance in your life and give you the opportunity to develop physical, personal and social skills (e.g. leadership, teamwork, management and organisational skills).  Then there are also obvious health, fitness and fun benefits.
If you are interested in participating in any extra-curricular sports activities at Waikato Diocesan you must consider the following before making a decision:

  • When and where the activity is held
  • How much time it will take?
  • Are there trials to make the team?
  • When are the training times, practices and games or performances?
  • Can I participate fairly, with pride in my school and my team?
  • Can I accept success with dignity and be gracious in defeat?
  •  What are the fitness demands?
  •  What will it cost to participate?
  • How will I get to practice, training, games or performances?

Then look at your commitments to school work, jobs, other sports, family, and friends and discuss these issues with your parents/caregiver.

It is important you know your obligations before making any decisions!  The Director of Sport and the P.E. Department recommend you participate in one activity after school and/or one activity only on the weekends.  Any more will put you under a lot of pressure.  Don’t over commit yourself.

After considering the above information, make a decision and sign up for the activity if you can meet these obligations. If you can’t meet these obligations, don’t sign up.

Your signing up, or trialling or selection for an activity is a contract.  It is a contract between you, your team mates, your coach, your parents and the school that you agree to participate for the season and can meet all the obligations of the activity including training, practice, competing and team meetings.  To be organised for any extra-curricular activity, you may need to create a management plan, timetable or use your diary.

COMMUNICATION

Extra Curricular activities notices will be broadcast through a variety of means. For team and activity notices please regularly check the

  • sports website
  • daily notices
  • sports notice boards
It is the student’s responsibility to check these regularly.
