SENIOR SPORTS BLUES
Candidates for the award of a Sports Blue must have proven to be role models in their sport. In addition to this they must have:
1. Consistently displayed outstanding ability, commitment to their chosen sporting activity
2. Shown outstanding sportsmanship as outlined in the Fairplay Charter
3. Be in year 11, 12 or 13
4. Must be a member of a School First Team in an official school sports code which participates in interschools competitions
5. Students must meet the following criteria as it relates to their sport
• Athletics and Swimming - winning an event in the Waikato/BOP Secondary Schools’ Championships and /or compete in the New Zealand Age Group or North Island Championships and gain a top 10 ranking (where there are more than 10 finalists)
• Cricket, rugby, soccer, hockey, tennis, netball, basketball, squash, badminton – the player must have at least gained provincial\regional A representative honours or in the opinion of their coach, reached the equivalent to this.
• Rowing - Winning an A Final at the North Island Secondary Schools Championships or placing in the top three in an A Final (excluding novice events) at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships.
• Cycling - Winning at the North Island Secondary Schools Championships (individual or team) or placing in the top three at the New Zealand Secondary Schools Individual Championships or New Zealand Secondary Schools Championships (or an event of the equivalent competitive standing)
• Triathlon/Duathlon –Top 3 placing at the Waikato Secondary Schools Individual Champs or placing in the top 5 at NZ Secondary Schools National Champs (a min of 10 entries per grade is required at both above events)
• Skiing - Winning at the North Island Secondary Schools Ski Championships or higher.
• Equestrian - Represented Waikato or another region in the National Pony Club Championships or placed in the top three in the North island Secondary Schools Equestrian Events, or Won at either the Waikato Secondary Schools ODE, Show Jumping or Dressage Competitions.
• Other Sports- gained provincial representative A honours and/or placed in the New Zealand Championships for their sport.
Players that fulfil these criteria do not automatically receive a Blues Award. The Blues Committee considers all nominations in relation to each individual sport, to the standard and level of competition within the sport and criteria for qualifying and playing in the Reps. teams. Players who receive a Blues Award are clearly recognised as ‘top’ in their sport.
Blues Awards will be presented at the Sports Awards Dinner each Year. Year 13 Blues recipients will also be awarded the Senior Sports Shield.
Junior Blues
These have the same criteria as for the senior sports blues but “top team” would be top age group team. Junior Blues are awarded to students in Years 9 and 10 only.
