Westlake Squash has one of the proudest records at National level of any sport at Westlake. Since the National championships were instituted in 1985, Westlake has won the Premier title eight times; more than any other school.
Last year Westlake fielded seven teams ranging from the Premier team through to the Senior B teams who find much enjoyment in playing socially and the Junior B team which comprises players who are just starting to experience the benefits of the game. Matches are played at 4pm Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays throughout term 2 and take from one hour to approximately one and a half hours depending on the grade of the team. Many boys find squash an ideal way to keep fit and with the games being mid-week, this allows them to participate in other weekend sports if they wish.
The Premier team finished 2nd at the Auckland Secondary Schools’ Squash championships in 2011 and this was due to hard work and long hours managing and coaching put in by parents Laurie French and Manu Yam.
The Nationals this year are to be held in Tauranga and under the guidance of Laurie and Manu, everyone is optimistic that our placing of 10th last year can be substantially improved.
